A simple secret for clear, radiant skin at home.
Regular, light to medium peels, are in my opinion, one of the best ways to improve and maintain your skin.
By regular, I mean every 3-6 weeks. And, light to medium peels mean you have little to no downtime, and they can be done throughout the year.
These treatments are essentially a deeper type of exfoliation which increases the rate at which old skin cells are sloughed off, and new ones are made. This is a natural process which happens in the skin, and by speeding this up, it enables your fibroblast cells to make more collagen and thicken the skin. (our skin thins as we age) The peel ingredients 'dissolve the glue' that holds the dead skin cells together.
Peels will also treat all kinds of skin concerns such as sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, scarring, ageing, acne and congestion. Different peel ingredients have slightly different actions, and their pH does also vary. They are usually always acidic, putting your skin in to a more acidic environment. This is that tingly feeling you get when they are on your skin.
Did you know that regular peels can reduce the likelihood of pre-cancerous skin lesions? So they offer both health and aesthetic benefits!
During lockdown, many of my clients are missing their regular peels. Even though our skills as skin therapists can't ever be replaced, thankfully, there is a home care solution! A local brand called Derca has a fantastic AHA Home Peel Kit for R540. The kit consists of a powder and liquid component which you mix together and then apply to the skin for up to 10 minutes. It self-neutralises after 10 minutes, and then you rinse it off with water.
It contains glycolic acid (from sugar cane), aloe vera and chamomile and has a pH of 1.9.
I have used many different peels over the years, and after trying this one would say it's a pretty potent and effective medical-grade peel for home use. I found it best not to apply too close to my under eye area (also avoid lips, eye lids and corners of nose), but had excellent results. Once removing the peel thoroughly, I applied a hydrating overnight mask to replenish the skin and ensure the skin barrier function is restored.
This is a peel that you could use every two to three weeks. You could also use it once a week for a more focused regime, especially if treating acne and congestion.
And last but not least, it's a locally produced and I always love to support local!
